With many children currently competing in athletics and cross country competitions we have seen a sharp increase in the number of students suffering from severs, otherwise known as ‘heal pain’. Severs Disease is characterized by activity-related pain that occurs on the back of the heel, where the Achilles tendon attaches on the heel bone, or calcaneus. The child may have swelling in the area, and tenderness to the touch. Sports requiring lots of running, jumping, and other high impact activities are particularly associated with Severs. Treatment involves, rest, icing after exercise, calf stretches and massage. Talk to your physio today if you think your child may be suffering from severs.
